Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the deal with tie-dye? Don’t you know the sixties are over?
A: Tie-dye is actually one of the oldest forms of fabric decoration, dating back centuries if not millennia. It is a "resist" method of dying where parts of the fabric are tied off in order to apply color in particular patterns and designs. It can be widely seen in many parts of the world including Japan (where it’s called "Shibori"), India, and many parts of Africa.

Q: What happens when I wash it?
A: It gets clean! Seriously, when you buy an article of clothing from me, it’s already been thoroughly washed in 6 complete wash cycles with special dye-suspending soap and in hot water. It’s also been through the dryer. It won’t shrink, fade, or bleed. Use common sense, of course—don’t bleach it (obviously) and do wash it with other bright colors.

Q: I did tie-dye as a kid and it all washed out. Why doesn’t yours?
A: The dye I use, Pro-MX (Procion) is a professional-grade fiber-reactive dye. This means that when properly activated in an alkaline solution and allowed to set for long enough, it permanently bonds to natural fibers such as cotton, rayon, or silk.

Q: I bought a tie-dye kit and mine didn’t come out like yours. Why?
A: It’s the same dye, but it takes a bit of practice to learn the designs, tweak the chemistry to your household water hardness, and learn how long it needs to set. I do encourage you to keep practicing!

Q: Do you teach classes?
A: If you live close enough and time allows, sometimes. Not often these days, though, I’m afraid, as I’m quite busy filling orders, preparing for craft fairs, and parenting my 4 1/2 year-old and 1 1/2 year-old.

Q: I’m a teacher and I want to tie-dye with my class. Any suggestions?
A: Yes! You can send me Email to or go here to check out my sheet on tie-dye with kids.

Q: How can I buy tie-dyes from you?
A: There are many ways to buy tie-dyes from us.  You can buy them from this Web Site, or you can find them for sale on  Ebay, or you can visit us at a Craft Fair near you, or you can send us an order via US Mail, or you can give us a phone call, or drop us an Email.
